John loved our holiday feasts. When we lived in Wilcox and Regina, we shared these wonderful occasions with our second and extended family the Daly's ( Aunt Rose, Gary, Linda, Pat and Dennis). At times, we would invite other family and friends and of course this group grew as people married , had children, We always had these huge feasts of turkey and the trimmings, ham, vegetables and marshmallow salads, dainties, and a variety of pies. After our feasting, we would clear the table and pull out the cards or games received over the holidays. John loved these occasions as we all did. He could consume 3 helpings of our delicious meal and never seem to gain an ounce. He was extremely lucky in the games we played and often left the table victorious and with a big smile on his face.
After we all moved to different places across Canada, those cherished moments were harder to find. I remember one Easter, John was living in Victoria and my niece Andrea and I were living in Vancouver. We persuaded John to come over and join us for dinner. Since he only had a day , he decided to take the float plane over. We cooked all our favorite dishes together and feasted, feasted, feasted. At one point , we were acknowledging how happy John made us by coming over and how this must have been his most expensive turkey dinner. He giggles and said, "It was expensive but I think last year might have beaten this year" He then proceeded to tell us that last year he decided to cook a turkey ( which he often did if he was alone during the holidays and would have his three helpings and then made numerous dishes after with what was remaining). That year, he bought a huge turkey , it was so big that he could not fit it in his freezer. So to enable him continue with his plans , he went out and bought a big deep freeze. We thought that was soooo funny and soooo John!
